So there is this really nice ‘53 Willy’s Jeep at a local dealership. I was really curious of the price, and what they are going for on the market. I finally got in contact with the dealer, who said it was “$8,500"...

Kinja'd!!!

After he stated the cost, he asked “so would you like to come in to see it?” “... honestly it’s too much.” “Well what would you like it to be at?” “Honestly, $3k or $4k.” I then proceeded to explain that yes, it’s an older car, but the history is a bit uncertain. Yes the Jeep looks great on the outside, but that says nothing about the quality of the engine condition and 4 wheel drive system and what not. “Well, we make sure the cars are running before we sell them.” I didn’t have the heart to tell the guy that two years prior, on that very lot, a dealer tried to sell me a 7th gen $8k-$9k Grand Prix, that had a cracked dashboard and just wasn’t in the best condition. A lot of items were damaged. I got my current Grand Prix for $6k, in a lot better condition. “Um, thanks anyways, have a good one.”

Kinja'd!!!

Still, it’s a gorgeous looking Jeep...

I agree. I told my wife that for that price, I’d rather spend it on a mini van.

Unfortunately, jeeps in general are ridiculously expensive, namely because you pay for the brand name, even used.

IMHO, if I buy a Jeep, I’m buying a vehicle that has more than likely taken off road, but roughed up, possible dented, numerous fixes (whether by a mechanic or a guy in his garage); I’m not paying a ridiculous amount of money for a used vehicle that has been through a lot. Brand name means nothing to me when it comes to the care and history of the car.

That’s a super cool Jeep.

That price looks decent conpared to what they go dor in my AO. Maybe a tad high, but there’s always room for negotiate at a dealer. That definitely doesn’t look like a $3k willys. Have you actually been shopping these? $4k wikkys are ratty but running (sometimes) and $3k willys usually need a lot of work. Anything with decent paint is usually at least $6k.

One dealer referred to it as a ‘wrangler’, I cringed inside.

That’s a neato ACME top on that thing. The front fenders are throwing me off with the little black metal supports. The tailgate is bugging me too, since it looks crappy enough to be original, but is missing the “Willys” stamp.

Imho I’d rather get a suv over a minivan, the only van I’d ever get is one of those conversion vans or one of the 70's era custom vans.

That appears to be a $7k jeep, so after negotiations their asking price isn’t far off. The racing seats don’t belong, and are a big turnoff for me. Even more so if they drilled new holes in the floor to mount them instead of fabricating rails that line up to the factory holes.

Well, in Michigan, older cars being sold are usually sold for higher than normal prices, because “reasons”. I’m interested in jeeps, but they are usually pretty high (imo) in price, for a fun car. It might be worth $8.5k to a Jeep enthusiast, but not so much for someone who would like to start off-roading for fun.

If honestly prefer a ratty car that’s cheaper, because I know it’ll get damaged. But even a ratty one out here would be overpriced, unfortunately.

I personally feel that jeeps are overpriced, especially wranglers. I’d love a wrangler, but I’m. It willing to pay the price tag for it.

Also, I like to steer clear of cars that are not stock, especially at dealerships. I’d like to know who fixed up the car, and at dealerships you never know what all was changed until you start taking the car apart.

We want a minivan because the Grand Prix is difficult with two kids. Plus, it’s like an enclosed truck bed too.

That’s a big problem with Jeeps. They are one of (if not the most) customized vehicles. Then consider how many are abused offroad (sounds funny to say since that’s what they’re designed for) Best bet is to find a stock one that was female driven.

I remember one time, I was looking to possibly purchase a used first gen Chrysler 300. One dealership had one, but it was heavily modified to look like a Bentley. That isn’t a problem, but it was priced as a normal 300, like $6k to $7k. In my mind, I kept thinking “if they modified the cars appearance this much, there’s no way to know what they did internally.” I wasn’t willing to pay that much for a non-stock 300, especially when I have visible proof that the car was taken apart at some time.
